THE INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE

The world-renown International Booker Prize celebrates the essential work of translators alongside authors remarkable fiction. It is presented to a single novel, translated into English, and published in the UK and Ireland. 2022 saw 6 books shortlisted, each examples of exceptional work from across the globe.

This years’ winners are Geetanjali Shree, for her novel Tomb of Stone, and translator Daisy Rockwell. Tomb of Stone is the story of an 80-year-old woman with a new, unconventional lease of life, and has been described as breath of fresh air, urgent yet engaging. Shree is the first Hindi writer to win the International Booker Prize and was presented with the award at the ceremony in London.

HOW IS THE BOOKER PRIZE MADE?

Originally biennial, the International Booker Prize was launched in 2005 alongside its sibling, The Booker Prize. As the Prize has evolved, becoming a yearly event, and presented to both translator and author, the award presented has also changed. In 2012, the International Booker Prize took form in cast acrylic, and as both the brand and the prize took on a new look, our in-house design team worked with the Booker Prize on a new custom award.

Today, the award reflects the anatomy of a book – a simple, rectangular shape – and mirrors it in a clear acrylic. Acrylic is widely versatile and, like the potential of pages, is a blank canvas for unique print, year-on-year. In keeping with the clean-cut lines and bold colours on the International Booker Prize logo, the colour-matched design is printed onto the surface to match the branding at the event and on the website.

Once presented to winners, the award is returned to Gaudio, where the narrow side is printed to match the spine of the winning book.
